Another week and another batch of BCHL alumni recognized with weekly honours in the NCAA. We go through it all in this week’s Roundup.
ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week
Jacob Quillan – Junior – Quinnipiac University (Penticton Vees)
Quillan contributed one goal and four assists during the weekend’s contests. Notably, he netted the overtime game-winning goal on Friday night. On Saturday night, the junior forward continued his scoring streak tallying three assists, steering the Bobcats to an 8-0 victory and a series sweep against American International. Quillan’s five-point contribution has him sharing the top spot in team scoring.
The Dartmouth, N.S. product played the 2020-21 pod season with the Penticton Vees and was the team’s second-leading scorer with 27 points in 20 games after putting up 13 goals and 14 assists. He also scored the overtime game-winning goal for Quinnipiac in the national championship game last season.
ECAC Hockey Defenceman of the Week
Davis Pennington – Junior – Quinnipiac University (Powell River Kings)
Pennington amassed four assists last week to stand atop the league’s leaderboard among defencemen. He scored his first point of the season on Friday night with an assist to help the Bobcats to their first win of 2023-24 in overtime. Pennington also finished with an impressive plus/minus rating of plus-five.
The 22-year-old played the 2019-20 campaign with the Powell River Kings and led the team in points from the back end with 32 in 57 games, good enough for top-20 in BCHL defencemen scoring. His 30 assists were tied for eighth among all league blueliners.
Atlantic Hockey Co-Goaltender of the Week
Tommy Scarfone – Junior – Rochester Institute of Technology (Surrey Eagles)
Scarfone stopped all 36 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame on Saturday. The Montreal, Que. native’s performance against the Fighting Irish included 17 second-period saves and a penalty-kill effort that saw him backstop the Tigers’ PK unit that finished the game six-for-six, including a 5-on-3 six minutes into the game and a five-minute major at the end of the second period. The shutout is the sixth of Scarfone’s career, which is tied for second among active Atlantic Hockey netminders and his .920 career save percentage is tied for seventh in conference history.
He shared the weekly honour with Holy Cross netminder Jason Grande.
Scarfone played for the Surrey Eagles for two seasons from 2019 to 2021. He finished his BCHL stint with a career save percentage of .922 and a goals-against average of 2.50. During the shortened 2020-21 pod season, he backstopped the Eagles to first place in the Coquitlam Pod.
Big Ten Second Star of the Week
Joey Larson – Sophomore – Michigan State University (Chilliwack Chiefs)
Larson amassed five points (three goals, two assists) as Michigan State split a road series against Air Force on Oct. 12 and 13. He logged the third hat trick in college hockey this season with a four-point night (three goals, one assist) in MSU’s 5-3 win over the Falcons and finished with a team-high 11 shots on the weekend.
The 2001-born forward played the 2019-20 campaign with the Chilliwack Chiefs and posted 14 goals, 19 assists and 33 points in 52 regular-season games.
NCHC Defenceman of the Week
Joaquim Lemay – Sophomore – University of Nebraska-Omaha (Salmon Arm Silverbacks)
Lemay was a factor at both ends of the ice to help the Mavericks to a season-opening sweep of Niagara. Offensively, he racked up three points from the blueline, scoring a goal each night. In Friday’s 8-1 victory, he handed out a primary assist before scoring on the power play. The next night, Lemay broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winning goal, again on the power play, midway through the third period. He was tabbed the game’s first star in Saturday’s 2-1 win.
Lemay spent the 2020-21 pod season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and had 10 assists in 15 games. Following that season, he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals.
CCHA Defenceman of the Week
Josh Zinger – Sophomore – Northern Michigan University (Salmon Arm Silverbacks)
Zinger paced all CCHA skaters with four assists last week, highlighted by a three-helper game against Minnesota Duluth in Friday’s 5-5 tie. He was even for the weekend and totaled four shots on goal with three blocks at the defensive end of the ice.
The 22-year-old from Red Deer, Alta. played 13 games for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks to start the 2019-20 season and had two goals and an assist before being traded to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
